Picking up your items also must be done in space and uncloaked near either a Customs Office or a launched canister from your Command Center, depending on how you export your products. Once you have deployed this from somewhere in space in the desired system, everything else can be done from anywhere in the universe until you export your items, which must be done in space in the same system as your colony.
To do anything on a planet, you need a Planetary Command Center matching that planet's type.
